Everyone has their own idea of what makes for cool watches. Some like timepieces with colorful graphics. Others prefer feature laden, water resistant types. But if you’re still unsure of what to buy, here are some basic issues you may want to consider.

Quartz and Mechanical Watches

Quartz watches are powered by batteries. Unlike mechanical timepieces, there’s no need to wind it. There are three quartz styles to choose from: anidigi, analog and digital.

The analog types come with numbers, tick marks or Roman numerals. The digital ones provide a precise readout in hours and seconds. The anidigi is a combination of the two. It has the digital display and an analog face.

To make your quartz timepieces stand out, you can get those with a GPS (Global Positioning System) and compasses. There are also quartz timepieces with altimeters, phone books and calculators. Kids will like quartz timepieces with animals and cartoon designs. Teens and adults may opt for faceplates with sports designs.

There are also mechanical types. These are the ones that have a semi or fully transparent display so you can see the motors. The mechanical timepieces are more expensive than quartz because of the craftsmanship involved.

What Materials are Available?

If you’re going to buy cool watches, the materials have to be considered. For the traditional look, go for precious metal wristwatches. You can choose from gold, silver, platinum, and sterling timepieces. Some of the pricier ones are studded with diamonds.

If you want something durable, choose one that is made of aluminum. These timepieces will be able to resist corrosion, rust and tarnish. Stainless steel is another popular choice as it is very strong. Other materials you can choose from are carbon fiber, titanium, rubber and plastic.

Titanium is used on many sports watches; not only is it sturdier than steel, but it is also lighter. They are rust proof and scratch resistant. The plastic and rubber bands are used in fashion timepieces.

Features

Many come with a calendar that indicates the day of the week and the date. Others can measure how much time has passed. Called chronographs, these are available in many formats. Some are in split second format. This allows the wearer to measure a couple of time segments at the same time.

The tachymeter scales can gauge average speeds by determining the time and pre-measured distance. Many timepieces also come with moon phase indicators. The moon phase is set on a disk. Water resistant timepieces are also widely available.

The resistance is determined in meters, feet or atmospheres (ATM). A 30 m resistance level indicates it is splash proof. A timepiece with a resistance level of 100 m means you can wear it as you swim. If you want something you can use when scuba diving, you should get a timepiece with a 200 m water resistance level.

In the end, only you can determine what elements make up a cool watch. But knowing what’s actually available in the marketplace can help you when deciding what to purchase.
